This one is an Ambrosia Maple.. it's about 7 in dia x about 5 high.. in this picture it's only partially finished with BLO... but LOML suggested it should maybe be food safe, so I have sanded it all down to raw wood and am working on a food safe finish... it had a small void that I filled with brass dust... kinda looks like a snake.

Hi Chuck,

When I need to finish a food safe bowl, I mostly use a vegetable oil such as "arachide oil" used for salad dressing. It protects very well and have no smell after drying. I applicate about 3 times, between each application I wait 30 min. The last time I use a dry cloth with the lathe turning at 1000 rpm and then I obtain a soft satin shine. I've try it with olive oil, but after a few weeks it begins to smell, I think it was rancing. You can also use parafine or grapepits oil in the same way.
Hope this helps you,
clem
