Chip n' dip platter

I finished this last night after working on it off and on for several days. It's made from a single slab of Bradford pear from a tree taken down in the front yard several years ago. It's about 15 inches in diameter and finished with Danish oil.
Bradford pear gets a bit tough after drying a while. It's the biggest piece I've turned so far.

Best part about that is the bowl is an ordinary Corelle bowl, easy to find and replace.

Beautiful wood. I have some Bradford pear drying in my garage - planted the tree about 18 years ago and it has a diameter of maybe 10 inches at the largest. Must have been a good old tree to get that big! We finally took ours down because of the mess. We got good pear from it 2 of those eighteen years. The other years bugs and bees got to the pears way before they were ripe and walking past it to get to the back yard was not fun with the bees on the ground eating the dropped fruit.

Very nice! I have (or had) several platter blanks to make some of these with. If I could get them to stop cracking while they're drying after rough turning them I may get one made one of these days.

I like to turn Bradford Pear... really nice tight grain and works up nicely... the trees split easily, but the wood seems to be pretty stable.

I like the c&d platter.. really nicely done.
