Carbide Tip Hollower

A friend of mine has a milling machine, so I called in a favor to see of he could help me make a carbide tip tool. We made it out of 1/2"x1/2"x12" S7 tool steel and the handle is made out of Bocote. I wanted a long carbide hollower to make it easier to hollow out travel mugs.

I've been wanting to use it, but the shop has been way to cold in the shop since we made it. hopefully with the weather warming up, I will be able to try it out.

Nice looking tool, but I sure don't like using cutters that large. They can get grabby. Maybe as a finishing tool, but not one to rough off a lot of stock. Yup, let us know how you like it.

I am still really really new at bowls and such, and I have issues reaching into the bowls and maintaining control. It seems the tools wants to grab. I am thinking of making some kind of a toolrest that will reach somewhat into the object so that I have a longer and more stable surface to help me control whatever tool I am using. I know it is probably my lack of experience and skills that are causing me this issue, so hopefully with more experience I will gain more skills. In the meantime I would love to see that tool in action

I have the same problem. I've seen a captive tool rest that looks interesting.

You can get curved tool rests that reach inside the bowls, or curved around the outside. I use them, plus I use a longer straight rest and send it inside the bowl as well. Remember in using a scraper or carbide tipped scraper, the end of the handle must be higher than the tip of the cutter. Get the handle too low, it gets grabby.

I am pretty sure that is a huge part of the issue I am having. I keep wanting to keep the tip UP and the handle DOWN. and I know better, but my mind is not trained yet.
