It finally cooled off here in the desert so I've been having some fun! The box & vase are made from mesquite and were gifted to my coworker for her birthday. The box is the "onion top" from Chris Stott's book "Turned Boxes 50 Designs" and I used the spear topped variation he shows because I liked it more than the original design. It's maybe the 5th box I've made, but there will be plenty more. I love making these things. The vase is thicker at the the bottom than it should be because my hollowing tool wasn't long enough to reach all the way down. The acorn has a sapele nut and padauk cap that I textured with the Sorby mini spiralling/texturing tool. Both pieces darkened significantly from using BLO which I will leave out next time. It's drilled for a screw eye and I plan on making a long string of them to use on my Christmas tree this year. Or more likely, I'll make two so each of my daughters can have one. Sorry for the bad pics but I took them with my ipad. Thanks for looking.
