Looking to cast some mini pine cones but I have been unable to locate a source for them. I have already looked in Hobby Lobby and Michaels but they seem to only carry the larger size pine cones.
There seems to be a number of suppliers of different species on Ebay but I'm not sure what species works the best for casting in pen blanks.
Can someone recommend what species works best and possibly a supplier?

I get mine from eBay.

My last purchase was for 600 miniatures for under $10.

They were a little smaller than I expected, but they worked out just fine.

Good luck and happy turning.

Yeah, I have a row of them behind my house. The problem is that size and structure of the pine cones I have found locally is not conducive to making an interesting blank.

After doing a few google searches I think I need to find male pine cones
Yes, there are male and female pine cones. Please don't ask me how to tell the difference!:biggrin::biggrin:

I've got to respectfully disagree about not getting interesting blanks using hemlock cones. I think the 2 attached pictures of pens made from blanks I've cast are very interesting.

I agree, those are very interesting!
How large were the pine cones you cast?

They are just typical Eastern Hemlock cones so they are roughly 1" high by 5/8" to 3/4" in diameter.

Michael

Apparently, the trees in my area are not Eastern Hemlock. Looking at some pictures, the trees around here may be eastern white pine.

Thanks for your help. I believe I'm looking for Easter Hemlock pine cones.
