In turning some of the inlace acrylester blanks over the past year, I've noticed that it chips out a little easier than other acrylic-type blanks.

I've changed to skew-only turning and have no problems anymore, but it's become one of those curiosity creating items for me to learn more about.

What is inlace acrylester and why does it seems to chip out more? Is it PR, or another acrylic substance?

THanks in advance for the knowledge!

Inlace Acrylester is a product name. The PR it is made from is PolyLite 32153 (there are at least 100 different formulations) manufactured by Reichhold. It does not have the same elasticity or machinability of S41 (Silmar 41) IMHO.

The primary benefit of Polylite over S41, is that it is designed to be loaded to 50%-70% filler(piments and additives).

This link has the Acylester MSDS on it. The MSDS tells the chemical manufacturer, and chemical

Reichhold polylite page. Which will also lead you to the same MSDS.

Clarification on Inlace Acrylester

Inlace Acrylester is our Trademark name for our pen blanks that we manufacture. (as seen here: http://www.woodturningz.com/Inlace_Acrylester_Pen_Blanks.aspx )It's not to be confused with the "Inlace Inlay" kits which are now manufactured by another company. Both product lines were sold to two different companies about 5-6 years ago or so... (That's when we purchased the pen blanks side) The formulation used for the inlay kits is different that what we use for the pen blanks as we have modified our materials over time to achieve better working properties.
