howdy, i haven't casted a ton of stuff, but i have done a few successful label castings (printed with logos and such) and quite a few homebrewed colors and i don't own a pressure pot or anything too fancy and all my casts have come out bubble free. i just mix it gently and pour it into the walmart round ice cube trays. i've only used the resin from michael's but when ready for more, i'll use the stuff you can order online, simlar 41 i believe it's called (just for cost, i have no reservations about the michael's resin.)

i'm still experimenting with how much catalyst per ounce of resin. i'm leaning toward 4 or 5 because i made a mistake on my first cast (thought i was using 3 but used 6 accidentally) and it came out about the best.

As for systems...I use Alumilite urethane resins exclusively. Alumilite is more user friendly than PR with no drops to count and virtually no smell. It is not considered hazardous material when it comes to shipping either. It is more expensive, however. I use molds that I make from white plastic cutting boards such as this one:

And I use a pressure pot from HF. I only use pressure, no vacuum.

Wow Curtis, nice display!!!

I have cast a couple dozen standard items, a half dozen cactus, a half dozen worthless woods and 30 or 40 label castings. I use a PVPot (tutorial on front page). Mr Fiberglas PR. Misc colorants, dyes and pigments. I use molds from CastenCraft, simple plastic molds. If I have to do something over sized, I will whip up a custom mold real quick, usually disposable.

I do find pressure very helpful. I don't try to cast without it. I don't use vibration to de-gas, so pressure is my friend.

Good luck and have fun.

Dozens of cactus, thanks Curtis, also dozens of snake again
I thank a member here, Thanks Don.I use PR that I buy from Composite One 5 gals. at a time. Done some worthless wood and a few other things. I use the pressure pot and just started using the ultrasonic cleaner to degas and this is working out better than vacuume.

You're welcome Roy. I also use the ultrasonic cleaner and like it better than vacuum. It is easier and works great. Thanks to Bruce Robbins for intoducing us to the cleaner. I'm now using a 5 gal can of polyester resin from Composite One and it is working better than any other PR I've used.
Do a good turn daily!

A few label pens. Most unique is this one:

Copper scrubber.

I use a HF pressure/vacuum setup and PR. Will switch to Alumilite as soon as I'm out of PR.

Wow , you guys are amazing, How to Question, To Curtis and others about gluing things to the tube prior to casting, like the fishing line, and do you paint the tubes, what kind of glue, and for other light or fragile items, how to handle them. Dave

Dave,
You will find several PR casting articles in our library and some others at http://www.penmakersguild.com in the articles section. My snake skin article is in both places. Look in the casting forum here on IAP for the instructios on how to cast the feathers used to tie trout flies.

Do a good turn daily!

Use mostly Castin Craft PR, occasionally epoxy, ultrasonics and pressure when clear, ultrasonics or nothing when pigmented.

Dave,

I do VERY LITTLE where I have to glue things to the tube and then cast. I almost always cast the object in resin and then drill and turn, just like a regular blank. In the case of the fishing line, for example, I simply made one heck of a mess of some fishing line (I am pretty good at that with bait casters:D) then crammed it into one of my molds and poured in resin.
