So, after the first (non-vacuum) soak, do you bake or not? I've seen instructions going both ways. Does it depend on the porosity of the wood?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Thanks,

OK, I'll try to answer my own question. I had downloaded an article from Instructables that said to bake after the first non-vacuum dip, then sand the outside of the blanks to allow penetration with the 2nd vacuum dyeing. I just tried 4 box elder blanks, which usually absorb dye pretty well, and was disappointed with the absorption of the 2nd dye. I think next time I'll just let it dry and not bake the first time.

No expert here but have experimented a little. There doesn't seem to be a right and wrong way to do it, just different ways. You'll have to experiment and see what produces the effect you are after.

If you are using Cactus Juice, it will not dry or evaporate until cooked.

You did it right the first time, not sure why it didn't take the dye very well. Maybe it soaked to long on the first color.
