I've been using Silmar 41 clear casting resin from http://www.mrfiberglass.com Another good source (but more expensive) is http://www.artstuf.com

There is others, but these two are my two sources.

Do a good turn daily!

I use S40 from Composite One, can be had for about $108 for five gallons.

Now also bear in mind, there are many types. If you have the wallet, urethane resins are nice, if you want cheap poly resin si the route.

Here is a link if you want to explore urethane casting resin.

No, price does not include shipping. It is local to me, so I run and pick it up. They have several different location all over the U.S. so check this link.

Wow, thanks Mrplace. I see we have them locally. I'll call them when I am ready for more resin. Do they sell in smaller quantities than the five gallons?

My resin of choice is Alumilite Clear (www.Alumilite.com) for casting. It is a urethane resin and is a fair amount more expensive than PR but is so much nicer to work with. It has very little smell and does not stink up my shop. It is a 2 part system with equal parts of A and B so that eliminates the guessing game of geting the right number of drops depending on what wattage light bulbs you have installed that day :). It is also not considered a hazzardous substance like PR which, to me, my health is worht the added expense. And it is has better elongation properties, meaning that it is less brittle but still harder than PR.

It is important to note that Alumilite Clear is still not a "safe" substance. The "B" side is Aliphatic Isocyanate. Accoring to NASA
Exposure to isocyanates is currently monitored by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH).

Isocyanates are powerful irritants to the mucous membranes of the eyes and gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts; direct skin contact can also cause inflammation. Respiratory irritation may progress to chemical bronchitis with severe bronchospasm. Isocyanates can also sensitize workers, making them subject to severe asthma attacks if they are exposed again - even at concentrations below the NIOSH regulation. Death from severe asthma in sensitized subjects has been reported [Fabbri et al. 1988].

Sporadic cases of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) have also been reported in workers exposed to isocyanates and individuals with acute HP typically develop symptoms 4 to 6 hours after exposure. Symptoms are often flu-like, with fever, muscle aches, and headaches. Symptoms may also include a dry cough, chest tightness, and difficult breathing. Individuals with chronic HP often experience progressively more difficult breathing, fatigue, and weight loss.

Use of a good ventilation/filtration system and mask is recommended.

Chuck,

Yes they do and that is what I based my "health" decisions on. Read the MSDS on PR and then on urethanes and tell me which one you would prefer to use!

Alumilite use a pop-up window for the MSDS display so if you have a pop-up blocker, it will not display properly. Pretty dumb if you ask me!

I see that Alumilite offers the MSDS with their products.. although couldn't get any of the data sheets to open..

They open as a popup so if you have a blocker you will have to turn it off. This should be a direct link to the water clear stuff.

Here is a link to the directory where all the MSDS documents are:
