Here we go with puzzle #4 - this is another Wood Identification challenge

DO NOT POST YOUR GUESSES IN THIS THREAD - READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW!

Your challenge for this puzzle is to identify the 10 woods shown in the image below. To help you out, I have listed 30 possible woods to choose from. All 10 of the woods in the image are in that list.

Now the rules for this puzzle:

The overall Puzzle Rules & Universal BASH Rules apply. They can be found here: Puzzle Contest - Official Rules

You may make only one guess, so take your time. You will have at least 36 hours from the time of this post to complete this challenge.

You must email your guess to iap.puzzles@gmail.com - your entry must contain your guesses for these 10 woods, your real first and last name, your IAP Screen name, and your email address. Invalid or multiple entries will be disqualified.

Here is a sample reply:

Email Subject: Puzzle #4
John Doe
johndoerocks
johndoe at iknowmywood dot com

1. Pecan
2. Slimy Oak
3.
etc

Scoring will be a little different this time. Points for the overall prize total will be awarded as follows:
4 or more correct identifications = 1 point
7 or more correct identifications = 1.5 points
10 correct identifications = 2 points

All entries earning 1 or more points will go into a random draw for the two prizes available for this particular puzzle.

These wood images all came from pen blank photos found on the web sites of some of our popular vendors. I have not made any adjustments to the color, tint, brightness or contrast of their photos. I may have made other adjustments like cropping, sizing, etc.

Banter is encouraged and may be posted in this thread, but please do not post any serious hints.

Good luck & have fun.
Edgar

Just a reminder that this puzzle is slated to close at midnight CST tonight, so you have about 11 hours to submit your entries.

Submitted my guesses! Edgar, you sure aren't making some of these easy on us, lol - the small sample sizes definitely makes it more of a challenge! I kept wanting a bigger picture or to be able to zoom out to get a better look at the woods to know if I was right or not!

In case anyone needs some help, I hope Edgar doesn't mind the hint I attached.

Do you have a better picture of the endgrain?:biggrin:

No endgrain photos :)

These were all direct copies from pen blanks & wood pictured on the web sites of 7 of our popular vendors. I copied the photos then cropped off parts of their image and resized them to produce consistent-sized images for this contest.

I did not make any color, tint, brightness or contrast adjustments to the photos nor did I apply any filters. The images all look exactly like they do on the vendor web sites except for size and orientation.

You have a little over 4 hours to get your entries in for this puzzle.

Even if you don't know anything about wood identification, just make a guess. If you get just 4 of them right, you will have a chance to win a prize.

OK folks, we could use a few more entries for this one, so I'm going to leave it open until Noon CST tomorrow (Thursday).

All you need is to get 4 of them right to get a number on the roulette wheel.

Now that's kind of scary - it seems to imply that more people got that crossword puzzle correct than have gotten 4 correct answers to this wood identification challenge....

Darn! My first typo of the year :frown:

Yep - shoulda said Friday.

We do have more entries with at least 4 correct guesses than folks who finished the puzzle, but we only have 11 total entries so far. That seems pretty lame when all you need to do is make a guess to submit an entry. A little thought might improve your chances, but even a total random guess has a chance.
