I got this for Christmas and am wondering what I should get to sharpen on. I do a lot of sharpening on plain sand paper and a flat stone we used for the boat shop. This way is working alright but the sand paper does not last that long.

What would you go with?
water stones
Oil Stones
Diamond stones
or stick with the sand paper.

You could go with any of the top three, it comes down to personal preference!
Water and oil stones have a tendency to hollow in the middle. Because of the long length of the jig, I would probably go with diamond stone.

There was a recent article in the AAW magazine that stated that most stones are not hard enough to hone the recent generation of turning tools. The authors only recommended diamond hones for most new HSS tools.
Your other choice is stick with sandpaper and change paper often.

I have a somewhat similar type from Lee Valley. I use wet (water) stones with mine. I'm no expert on this sort of thing, but it works well for me.

Can you point me to that article brad? I would like to read it.
Took me a little while to find it, my memory is not as sharp as my skew these days. ;)
