Tip of the Week:

Normally when parting an item off the lathe, we use our free hand to catch it......when it is a toothed gear, I choose to go a safer route. With this piece, I used a wooden Morse taper mandrel (in the tailstock) from another project as the "Catcher" when the gear was parted loose.
I assumed the gear would climb out of my leather gloved catching hand and end up broken on the floor.

The "Catcher" worked as planned.

Thanks for the great tip but tell us more about the gear. How you did it and what are you going to do with it. You better be careful or I might show up on your doorstep one day begging for some lessons.

Nice tip, Charlie!

For a while now, I've been using a simpler version of it -- a length of dowel, usually hand held. If I need both hands free I hold the dowel in a chuck in the tailstock (or just let it sit in the tailstock through-hole.)

Hey Cody! This is a maple gear almost 5" diameter and is the feature of an art piece. I learned the technique and finishing from Nick Agar.
I say we get together and have some Turning fun!
