In preparation for teaching my sphere and egg class at Woodcraft, I needed a method of holding the spheres for the second orientation of turning. My plan was to use cup chucks/cup centers.
I measured the live centers at the store with calipers, came home and got to work. I drilled the block with two forstner bits and then turned the larger inner diameter to a nice snug fit on the live centers. I turned six of these in case I had that many students.
Next, I mounted these on pin jaws to shape the face which would hold the sphere. I also added a piece of chamois with double sided tape as a pad.
They worked like a charm and was a fun turning exercise.
For the headstock, I also had pieces held in a chuck with a recess for the spheres.
