If its a bench top lathe flat and level is a good rule of thumb. I have 2 bench tops I use, and both are on benches that are flat. I do pen turning so the weight of the lathes (65 & 100lbs) is sufficient to keep them in place for me.

Hope that helps.

I cut a piece of 3/4" plywood and clamped it into my workmate. Then I leveled my lathe on that. It works great and gives me a nice table to work on. I made a hole under the lathe in the plywood and fit one of my dust collection ducts in it. Then I am also able to drill holes in the plywood to fit all my tools and other things on it. It works great for me as a pen turner!

Mine sits on top of a very sturdy work table my father made back in his cabinetry making days. It's got a good 3" solid top that I bolted my rikon onto. Table is heavy as well which has given me very little vibration even when I run small type projects off center.
