Anyone have problems with the speed controller. Mine is changing speed all on its own usually going slower and then eventually it will get back to going the speed I started at. It looks like this may be a $160 part.

Are you sure the speed is actually changing? I thought I had the same problem on my Jet 1642 until I checked the speed with an external tach and found out it was the internal tach that was giving me erroneous readings.

Have you checked on warranty? I have the same lathe and it has a 5 year warranty.

Ya the speed goes down very slow and then goes back up. I will check the date when I bought it. Thanks.

There are places that can repair the controller. I would suspect that the speed control pot is bad. These are usually not the best quality and can get dust inside. Also, there might be a bad solder joint on the board.
