My solution is a bit out of the ordinary but here goes.
Get about 2 feet of aluminum foil, maybe less, and fashion it into the rough shape of the taper end and then pack it into the headstock.
Knock it out an observe the difference with the one that won't fit.
...How's that for rocket science? Besides, I was told there would not be any math Mal!

HaHa, Dale ... OK, no math for you !! . But that's the way my mind works ... long history in trigonometry and calculus !!

But your suggestion seems quite brilliant ... I love it ... so practical ... and everybody has a roll of aluminum foil in the cupboard !! . I stand in awe of simplicity !!
