Is anyone using a custom tool rest with a Rikon 70-220vsr? I just got one, but because it is perfectly vertical, and doesn't have a forward angle, I can't get it as close as I would like to the spindle. Rick suggested there might be a spacer that can be removed from the banjo, but the only spacer is part of the rod and therefore not removable.

Has anyone already found a good solution for this problem?

I have a Rikon 70-220vsr and I use rick's custom rests. I have no problem at all getting as close as I want to my piece. Pictures of your setup would definitely help.

I know what you are experiencing. Since you mentioned Rick, If you have one of his tool rests, and can get another piece of the same rod he uses and have it welded to the existing tool rest at about an 11 o'clock location as you look at it from the end, it would put your leading edge farther away from you, and closer to your work. It would also make your rest a bit taller, and you may or may not have to cut the post part off a little to be able to drop it lower.
