For those who have worked with the blanks made from the staves of barrels, what finish did you use? I prefer a CA finish but don't know if it would bury or mask the scent of these blanks?

I usually use CA and I'm sure that does seal the smell. Probably have to go without a finish to keep the smell for awhile.

I used CA on the one I done and had a spare blank that I kept bagged up next to it so people could smell it. I also included the extra blank with the sale......It went to a writer on a whiskey blog.

I've turned both and have always used CA. I can't say as I've noticed much smell left by the time I've turned to size (although, for the wine barrels, I have soaked the turned blank in wine, again, to give it more color).

YMMV
