For those who are handy with some tools and don't want to wait for it to come back in stock, you could build this for about $25 give or take depending on how fancy you want to get or what scrap you already have on hand.

20rpm 12v DC high torque worm gear motors are available on ebay for about $12. Add some aluminum angle, some 1/4" all thread, wood or acrylic for the plate and a bit of your time to put it all together.

Head to a garage sale, to find a good option for the motor. A BBQ rotisserie.
I was checking a couple of options for making a drying rack for fishing pole makers. And saw a couple made using these.

turning the finish

I was thinking of that a old microwave turn table motor would also work .

I went with Option B more lathes ...

If you have an old computer power supply and virtually any speed 12V DC motor, you can now buy PWMs on ebay for less than $10 to control the speed down to 20 rpm or less. A very easy and straight forward wiring. I built one very similar with spare parts. Will have it on display at the MAPG. It does bring a new method for finishing and an alternative to get into casting on the cheap for low production.

I mounted a Heat gun about 18 away from one of my lathes, if I need to finish a pen the same day I just leave it spinning on low for a while with the gun on. Normally I just set aside for a day and polish 10 or 20 at a time.

I'm in the process of engineering a single mandrel one from a BBQ motor....it uses a 5/16 square shaft.....I was going to drill it and put an old mandrel in the 7mm hole with JBWeld....
I was going to drill and thread it but the walls are going to be thin on the shaft...too thin for any strength. Any ideas? Is this idea even any good?

Sorry John...I didn't mean to steal the thread.

Hey discuss away. No problem here. I just threw the link out there because we had discussed this some time ago. I am always amazed how things get talked about here and then show up on PSI catalog. I believe there should be some kick back to this site for all the ideas we supplied them over the years:)

Many people have taken barbecue motors and made some kind of drying rack with them.

Maybe you can take a piece of aluminum and square the end and then drill it out for the size you need. Drill and tap a set screw to hold the rod. Probably what I would do.

I don't need it for drying, but I've been toying with the idea of making one for thread wrapping. Definitely lots of times I wish I could go slower than 50rpm which I think is what I'm limited to now.
