I was at Rockler a few days ago to replace my StickFast CA glue, and I noticed that Rockler added two GluBoost CA bottles to the shelf. I bought both of them and the GluBoost accelerator. They are not the regular glue, they are the CA finish: GluBoost Fill 'n' Finish, and GluBoost Fill 'n' Finish Thin. The accelerator is the same across their product line.

I used them for CA finishes on four PSI "Faith, Hope, Love" pens - olive, carob, and two Irish bog oak pens. I used them improperly, applying two coats of thin and then three or four coats of the regular finish. After reading information from GluBoost's website, they expect you to use one or the other finish, but finish with thin. I was gentle with the accelerator. I sanded/polished with all nine micro-mesh pads (wet), then applied Hut Ultra Gloss Plastic Polish. The finishes turned out well.

Those are the 2 that you are supposed to use. Blue and orange bottles. 2 coats of blue then 2 coats of orange.

Yeah, but I did them in the "wrong" order. I put two coats of orange (thin) first, then three coats of blue (regular). I was in a hurry to get these pens done. I will read and follow the instructions next time.

Probably doesn't matter too much. some people start with thin CA then medium and some the other way around. How'd they turn out??

They turned out very nice indeed. I made them as thank you gifts for four members of a family that is doing a special favor for one of my children.

I had been struggling with CA finish issues since January/February. I went to Rockler to buy replacement StickFast glue to see if new glue would fix the problems, and noticed the GluBoost finishes on the shelf. I had read about GluBoost here on Penturners. Here is the thread I started about my CA finish issues:

http://www.penturners.org/forum/f28/help-lost-my-touch-ca-finish-159868/

In the past, I used StickFast CA glue (4 thin, 4 medium in that order) for finishes, but started having problems in January. I replaced my StickFast thin, medium, (and for good measure, flexible) at Rockler the other day. I left them unopened. I decided to give the GluBoost a try, and it worked out well. Based on that experience, I will continue using the GluBoost for finishes, but will try to apply it as documented by GluBoost (2 regular, 2 thin in that order). We will see if there is any difference.

So there is really no wrong way to use it. The idea of using the blue (Fill N Finish) first comes from the concept of leveling the surface before you use put the orange (Fill N Finish - Thin). I think leveling the surface first makes more sense than expecting the thin to work harder. GluBoost is self-leveling. You can apply with the lathe off and many times I do - especially for those first two coats. Then a very light steel wool. Once the surface is level and de-nibbed the thin should act simply as the top finish. There are a few videos on the technique on YouTube by myself, JohnU, and Ed Brown.

If you are new to the process then try putting it on with the lathe off. I apply with the grain and use my free hand to rotate the mandrel. You will get a very consistent coverage. And you are correct a very light mist of the accelerator should do it. And yes it is required. You will not have the issues generally associated with accelerators. It is part of the system

And sanding should be light. Steel wool to level. Micromesh. And then a buffing. I have been very happy with the product. I demoed it numerous times at the MPG and had people who never used it before leave with beautiful finishes.

Good luck.

Agreed! I still use Stickfast for gluing but GB is awesome for finishing using the method above. Lathe off, 2 coats of each with .000 steel wool in between. Now that it's on the shelf at Rockler all is good with the world. I have the free master tint I got with my first order but keep forgetting to use it.
