When I did one for my nephew, I used Minwax stain. Let is dry overnight and the next day gave it about 6 coats of lacquer. Because I deal with refinishing antiques, sprayed a gloss finish which was rubbed down to a satin sheen with 0000 steel wool and Murphy's Oil Soap.

This has been several years ago and the finish held up fine.

The simplest finish to do will be Watco Danish Oil, or another equivalent oil/varnish mixture. It should be durable enough, but it isn't as repairable as lacquer. I wouldn't stain.

There are a million ways to finish Oak. Some are better than others, and some take longer than others. Here is the one I have sellted on.

Minwax "Golden Oak" stain gives a nice color to the wood. Follow the directions on the can. Follow that the next day with 2 coats of the Minwax "helmsman" Spar Varnish, applied one day apart, and you will have a durable finish that will take the abuse and look better with age.
