Finish sanding alternative

I just turned my first three pens and I used an old technique that I learned from an old man for finish sanding. On this pen I used 180 grit followed by 220 and then 400. At the end I used cardboard which gave it a preshine before the finish went on.

Has anyone else used cardboard?

I have used brown paper bags, it gives the same kind of effect...

Never tried it, but from the looks of your pen, it works very well. A very nice finish. Thanks for sharing.

Some say that brown bags like Tom mentioned are about 2500 grit. People use them for FP nibs to break them in. Poor mans micro mesh.

I have used paper bags. I use them especially on woods that would clog MM, or on finishes that have dried, but not fully cured.
