Difference between Rouge and White polishing compounds

Hi Folks.
Just a question that may might think is a stupid question but what is the difference between Rouge and White polishing compounds?

If you are referring to the compounds that come with the Beall Buffing System, the rouge is more coarse and the white diamond is fine. You would use the rouge first and then the white then wax. Depending on what you are doing you may choose to skip the rouge and go straight to the white diamond. The wax is always optional.

The best thing is to do a little testing to see what works for you.

Rouges are used for removing fine scratches and imperfections, while the polishing compounds are used to bring out the luster.

IMO, don't use a wax after the polishing. It can ruin the shine by dulling it and potentially cause blemishes. Wax doesn't offer much protection since it wears easily. JMO.:wink:

If the finish still shows some of the open pores in the wood, the compound can get trapped and leave hundreds of red or white spots.

You can use it on wood. You just need your finish not to leave the pores open. If you are using several coats of CA as your finish this wouldn't be a problem. For other finishes on wood it will depend on the wood and your process.

There are lots of different compounds you can use and are graded by the "cut" or how abrasive they are, and the "gloss" or how shiny the result will be. More information on compounds here:
