PEN 1

Kit used: Wall Street II
Process Used Burls are amazing but in my opinion, they sometimes need a little help in contrast and texture. I used 2 pieces of Padauck at a 45degree angle and segmented both pieces with aluminum accents to provide an effective contrast and clean line.

Kit used: Mesa pen
Process Used Used an Inlace Acrylester blank called "jungle-moss". I felt the green offset the black nicely, and the chrome brings out the blue-green reflections. Simply turned and finished through 2000 grit and polished with McGuire's plast-x. The pen does see daily use and has performed well.

PEN 10

Kit used: Triton Ballpoint
Process Used This contest required an non modified ball point pen kit. I selected a Triton Ballpoint. The blank is an original Parker Pen Company blue Crushed Velvet blank. The challenge was that the blanks are 3/4" x 5/8" which doesn't leave much room for error when drilling. The blank was reverse painted bright silver to increase the contrasts in the blank. The blanks were turned, sanded, micro meshed and buffed with goal of an exceptional fit and finish.

PEN 18

Kit used: Apprentice Classica Pen Kit Gun Metal
Process Used This pen was made with two separate blanks. The outer blank is dark curly spalted maple. The inlay is birds eye maple. This was my first attempt at this style of pen. I drilled a 29/64 hole in the outer blank, and a 27/64 hole in the inlay blank which the brass tube was epoxied in. The inlay blank was turned down to 29/64, finished and epoxied into the darker blank. Caution was taken not to take material off to quickly to prevent chipping away the outer blank. Sanded to 1200 grit and finished with a home made recipe of French Polish, which brought out the depth in both blanks creating a nice even finish.

Kit used: Berea Cigar Satin Black
Process Used The soft brown tone of the riftsawn white oak complements the double celtic knot and satin black plating. The double knot and accent rings in the upper barrel comprise black veneer sandwiched between golden yellow veneer. I made the double knot by spacing the "rope" one saw kerf width between segments at 45° angle. A light wipe of walnut oil highlighted and enriched the colors before applying a CA finish.

Kit used: Gun Metal Executive
Process Used This is a gun metal Executive matched with a molten metal inlace acrylester blank. This is the first inlace I have turned and although a bit tricky it is a beautiful blank and polishes so nice and deep. I think the gun metal is a great plating to match it with.

Kit used: SPW Le Roi Elegant Royale in Rhodium (Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 refill)
Process Used I wanted to use a kit that showed off more of the blank than usual. I knew I wanted to use one of Robutacion's (George's Bits of Timber) Resifill blanks so I made a total of 3. Sanded each through 600 grit sandpaper then through 12,000 grit micromesh then applied 4 to 6 coats of Doctor's Woodshop Pens Plus. Finally I buffed the assembled pen with Renaaissance Wax Polish, then picked the best. Thanks for looking.

Now how can you pick just three from that bunch of beautiful pens!

Exactly....every time I received an entry, it reminded me of the level of talent we have amongst us~

Well done by every entrant. Let's show them how impressed everyone is and VOTE.

There are some amazing pens there. One of the unfortunate things about this contest is that invariably someone will get only a few votes. That doesn't really reflect how much we might appreciate the work done. I kept switching my choices, depending on if I was in the mood for segmented pens, acrylic pens, wood pens, burls or whatever. Finally just asked my wife and son to weigh in. There are some amazing pens which didn't receive one of my three votes. Congratulations to all who entered.

But you know.. for me.. and I KNOW that my pen will not win or even come close, even ONE vote means a significant amount to me. It just shows that someone else can see the same things we saw when we were creating it. I know there is a huge difference in what I can see is the most creative, the prettiest, the most skilled, and what I might actually want to have an use. I will never feel badly for low votes. I am just proud that I had enough gumption to enter. :) :)

Agreed. I especially have a hard time with segmented vs non segmented pen in the same competition. I think the beginning contest (and others) should be split into two. Same rules as this year, but make a segmented contest and non-segmented contest.

Looks like a tie for the top spot and a tie for the second highest. Are you taking the top three pens or the top three vote getters to the final vote?
