Hi peoples,

This is the first game for 2015 and we are going to start the year with a bang and a hell of a game.

To start with, let me just tell you what the prize will be. There will only 1 (one) winner, and that person will received these. The pics show exactly what kit tubes I used, and can finish the whole 5 blanks and make 5 stunning pens, the value of this prize is of AU$70.00, you pay AU$14.00 shipping...!

The reason why I decided to not post the pics of blanks from the prize is that, this game question(s) have lots of pics to be posted, they will also serve the purpose of introducing these new blanks to you guys and gals, I finished the only a few days ago and, they have not been listed anywhere, yet...!

Have a good look at the pics, the group pic show 2 lots, the blanks #1 to #12 are made from a different tree species than the second lot, blanks #13 to #19 the last 2 blanks that I made samples from, are from these 2 batches, #20 is from the first batch and #21 from the second batch. The resin mix is exactly the same for both batches, I used the new Violet Shimmer and the Sky-Blue with a "chunk" trick done to it.

The game question, is divided in 3 parts, you have to guess correctly all 3, to win the prize, and it goes like this;

*- What is the tree material used with the resin...?

*- What cut type was used on batch 1 and batch 2...?

*- What are the 2 tree species names used on both batches...? (from my list)

Enjoy the pics and good luck...!:biggrin:

Cheers
George

Those are beautiful blanks! I wish I knew my woods better, guess I'll have to wait until you put some up for sale! My guess would be that it's made from the bark of the tree but I have no idea as to what kind of tree. I'm new to all this, maybe I can get partial credit if I'm correct?

:)Don't be intimidated by your lack of wood identification skills. Just peruse George's timbers list - only 82 to choose from and make a wild guess. You can also find photos of most of his blanks on his web site. My wood ID skills are pathetic, but I've been lucky enough to win several of George's contests. Unfortunately, I'm on probation for this one. :)

alright.......I will try.......but don't hold out any hope.

STONE Acacia.....but I am going to say it is root material
X-cut for batch #1
I believe that Batch #2 was made from Pieces of the root as the resin was poured. (Does cutting style matter then?)

I wouldn't know but by what I read......I hope they are white and silver.

Looks like combination of heartwood/sapwood
Cross cut
#25 Knotted Pine and #24 Cork Tree
Jeff
PS: I should be well off the DL and these are totally wild guesses. I'm wondering George if these are totally new species of resifills not listed anywhere before?

Yes Jeff, as I mentioned on the opening post, these are new just finished a few days ago, they will be listed as soon as we get the game done...!

So far, no one got it right, some were close some not so much, I can say though that, they are not any of the Acacia species...!

Humm, so close and then, so far...! they are 2 different tree species used

You guys are doing a lot better than I first though and while it may look extremely difficult at the start, things get a lot easier and will make a lot more sense if you concentrate on one question at the time and think a little...!

Even though, there are 82 wood species in my list, some of them never had any bark, like the barrels, and you may recognise some of the species and know that, many of them, don't have a rough outer surface, if you are looking into tree barks. From there, you endup with a small number of tree species that could be candidates to the correct answer, after that is all up to you...!

Good luck,

Cheers
George

Well, well, no one got it so far, I knew that you guys would go for the "obvious" however, was the idea of using something that was not so obvious that made me do it and I'm glad I did as I throw lost of this stuff (both species) in the firewood pile or cut it in such way that would be pretty much usable to make blanks like there.

Lets see if I can help a little;

*- So, we all agree that, the 2 tree species used are in my 82 names list...!

*- Everyone seems to have no doubt that, the material is tree bark...!

*- Yes, 2 different wood trees species were used.

*- The batch #1 is not #24 Cork wood as most of you seem to believe, this species are not part of these 2 batches.

*- No one has given the correct name for batch #1 however, its name has been associated with batch #2

*- No one has given the correct name for the batch #2

*- These wood species names are not part of these 2 batches, 1, 2, 13, 14, 15, 19, 24, 25, 47, 49, 52 and 55

*- I will make no mention of the cut type, that is to me, obvious...!

Well, if this doesn't help, I don't know what it will...!

Good luck,

Cheers

One more night climbing Australian trees ! Will be as good at it as a Koala soon .

Bark . Batch #1 Straight cut #51 Australian silky oak , Batch #2 Cross-cut # 33 Tortuosa willow

Well mate, I have to give it to you, you really are working very hard for the prize, huh...???

What's wrong with the Australian Ash, I have 2 varieties and both have beautiful wood, (in my eyes), I'm yet to use it as firewood.

Some trees have thin bark, others have it thick to very thick, some are very smooth, other are rough as hell with everything in between so, not that many choices, from my collection...!:rolleyes::biggrin:

I've heard that our friend wyone wants to give it a go, I reckon, he may need to hurry up...!:hypnotized:

As for the Orange Acacia Jeff, the bark is thin and smooth, Ok to cut when green but god forgive if you let it dry too much (as all the ones I collected/cut), it makes the chainsaw "spark", no need to tell, what it does to the bandsaw blade, huh...?

I really want to see those prize blanks made into nice pens, I already know what the kit that needs to be used and I quite like it unless, there are other kits that use the same size brass tubes, in that case, I wouldn't have a clue...!

Lets go people, last call...!

Cheers

Looking at the banksia bark, it looks pretty interesting. Maybe since the prize is banksia blanks, the bark is from the prize tree ... ya think?

Gotta try to think like George.
