I would like to put a cigar band on a pen, but I don't want to feel the band. If I just use CA to finish the pen I would guess that the band would still stand out. I was thinking of getting a set of bushings machined down slightly smaller than original then turning the blank, then casting it in resin with the band glued on and then re-turning the blanks to correct size. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Has anyone done this?

Thanks,
Randy

Once you have the barrel turned down to the bushings, take the barrel itself, with no bushings or mandrel, and put it between a live center and a dead center, and turn it down to the size you want. Sand the blank as smooth as you want and glue the band on. Let the whole thing sit for a couple of days, for the glue to completely cure, then do your casting. You won't (probably can't) make the wood (or resin) too smooth for the resin to stick, and you don't want to have to turn all of the resin off to fix a problem.

Sounds like a great idea! Good luck.:)
