This is my
interpretation of the Russ-Line pen, and is made from Curly Maple with
Cocobolo for bands and finial accents. The pen uses the hidden clip
technique. The finish on the pen is my first CA/BLO finish in several
years in honor of Russ. The two pen halves are each slightly longer
than the tubes to make up for the lost centerband length with the
resulting pen exactly matching normal slimline
length.

This is a
Long line desk pen. Followed instructions found on the Russ Fairfield
Site.
This one is done in Olive wood with a Dark green band.
The base was done in a dark green to match the band of show off the
olive wood.

This Russ-line entry was made with a fancy chrome
slimline kit from Woodturningz. The upper barrel is Ebony with
aluminum bands near the center. The bottom barrel is black palm. The
pen was finished with BLO/CA and then polished with EEE followed by
One-Step Plastic Polish

Here is a Fat Line in honor of Russ Fairfield. It is made
from Dogwood Burl with a Padauk center band. The finish is 10 coats of
CA. It was micro-meshed thru 12,000 grit and then buffed with Hut
PPP.

Russ always
seemed to like using parts not included in the kit, primarily the clip
and/or center band. I have replaced the nib center band and finial
using store bought pewter beads. The outsides were not modified
(except the rivet in the finial), but the parts had to be customized
to attach to the stock pen barrels of the basic 7mm kit. The blank is
spalted ash. Enjoy!

This is a
longline made from some sweetgum tree roots that have grown out of the
ground and are starting to decay in some areas. CA finish with a small
piece of corian Earth as a centerband.

Russ
Fairfield was the king of slimline pen turners and a big proponent of
TiGold plating. Therefore, I made this longline out of Kingwood and
Ebony with a TiGold nosecone. I normally buff my pens, but in
keeping with his teachings, I sanded to 2000 grit and burnished the
wood with a piece of brown paper bag instead. Then I put on a CA/BLO
finish (using Russ' technique) instead of the straight CA finish I
normally prefer. I turned a beavertail on the end, which is not part
of his longline design, but I think Russ would permit me this
embellishment. Because it's a funnel pen, I froze the transmission in
the extended position with a drop of CA glue. I hope it shows how
much I learned from WoodTurnerRuss.

This is padouk/ipe pen with copper accents in "bright
copper" kit.
I feel like this one should not have CA, as both woods are extremely
dense and from my experience go well in bare wood form and looks nice
even after heavy use. So, polish to highest grid and some oil mix for
better grain popping and moisture protection.

"Fat Line" style slim using cherry wood. Center band is a
blue resin cast cholla cactus cut-off I had in my cut-off box
segmented between two pieces of aluminum. Clip end finial is also the
same blue resin from another cut-off.

New for the Bash
comes this Chubby Long Line Ballpoint. Made from a combonation of grey
clouds, synthetic bone, and a custom sparkling red wine cast acrylic.
While turning the grey cloud, I noticed small red glitter specks
throughout the material, and thought what better opportunity to use a
recent cast made of PR with red dye, and some edible luster dust and
glitter. Hey! whatever it takes! Rhodium trim ring on a tenon for the
center band and black front section. To follow tradition of a desk
pen, I made this simple stand. Turned down from Redheart, painted
black, and finished off with shellawax. Was fun to make, and the first
pen I completed for the bash this year, ironic it has one of the last
deadlines!

I turned the pen
from brass, and etched the pattern into the pen. the background of the
etch has been coloured black and lacquered. the rest of the pen is
24ct gold plated. No CNC was used in the making of this
pen.

For my
"Russ Line" entry, I choose a niece piece of Grapefruit Wood. Cut the
centerband with a skew then back filled with green metal flake to
match the slimline hardward. Finish is CA/BLO using the process from
Russ' video.

This entry has the style of a Fat Line with the short
front section of a J-Line. It's made from Red Plum and Blackwood on a
Black Chrome Slimline kit.
