Hello; I want to make some bottle stoppers that fit OVER the top of a wine bottle, kind of like an upside down cup.

How big are common wine bottles in OD?? 1-1/4", 1-3/8", 1-1/2" ??

I thought of visiting the local wine emporium with a set of calipers, but don't want them to give me a wrap-around jacket!!:)

Thanks for any suggestions.

There's no standard dimensions for wine bottles, but the one you're looking for "generally" ranges from about 28mm to 30mm.

The Gino Pinto company publishes their bottle specs which might be a good reference.

Randy, I used to make a stopper I called a "hidden cork" stopper... I think I drilled the blanks at 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 for the blank to fit down over the bottle...I can check tomorrow when I'm back in the shop... getting ready to go over the mountain to GA to have dinner with my son or would check now.

These are all sold and gone, so I can check the size of the hole over the bottle.

Mine are like Chuck's, but I only use 1.25. I drill my hole first, then use a homemade reverse expanding arbor that fits my collet chuck. This keeps the hole centered on the finished turning.
