We made our first black palm pen at the blind center yesterday. Hard stuff! I soaked it with thin CA after turning and before sanding. It was beautiful, but almost impossible to burn with the laser! At first I thought the laser had failed, since I could barely see the name on the pen. Had to reburn it four times, increasing the time each time. Even then, it was very shallow and light...barely visible and not deep enough to put filler in.

Not the laser...worked fine on the next five items I engraved. Just REALLY hard wood, I guess. Or fireproof.

Just finished a bottle stopper. First time it blew up. I then stabilized the only remaining piece and this time it worked. Definitely will stabilize Black Palm before trying to turn anymore.
