Are these the punches you guys use to take apart a pen?

Yup -- and get a second set - they are handy for all kinds of stuff - including marking the center of a hole onto an underlying piece of goods.

Had the task earlier this year off marking and driling holes in 1/4 inch stainless steel

They were just the right tool for marking holes.

Don't have anything, hence the query. I just thought tapping on the dimpled end would flatten it and render it useless for doing other things.

I'm not sure where I got them. I've had them for a long time, but they are pretty much the same. Maybe a little better quality/steel?

Could be .. but these are pretty tough so far. I've whacked them pretty
good with hammers, mallets .. even striking them on an anvil and
those dimples aren't showing any wear. But I do have multiple sets
so one of them I planned on beating up. Haven't hurt them yet.

I use these and they are surely a softer steel and will 'shroom up on the top but not an issue as the pen components are softer yet.

I have had to grind the dimple off of a few of mine for disassembly. Specifically on the zen Gran Torino Electra type when pushing out the post end.

I've also experienced this problem with them, but that was when the loc-tite leaked into a tube and I tried to remove a transmission.

I just looked mine over again and did some hammering. One set is
definitely softer than the other two. But I can't remember where I got
each set!

just go get a set. i got the same HF set for dissasembly of pens i read about on here. only disassembled one or two pens, but have used the punches for all sorts of things since i've gotten them. Very handy things to have around the shop.
