We recently received a check for .01 for some interest on an old escrow account. It cost them more process, print and mail the check. We didn't deposit it. I would be to embarrassed and it would cost me $5 in gas.

A CPA would applaud you:
- You didn't give the government an interest-free loan.
- You had use of your money to spend/invest where and when you wanted.
- You don't have to wait to get your money back.

I do understand the good feeling that accompanies the though of a nice refund.

We get a nice refund every year. My wife doesn't like surprises at tax time.
Unfortunately, we also usually get a nice big repair bill for this house every year about the same time.
This year is no different. We got a nice refund. Now we have to spend out $4000 for tree services.
5 enormous oak trees have to be trimmed or removed entirely.

It's always something. I need to win the lottery. Seriously.

Herb, Isn't it a lot cheaper to just Buy your Pen Blanks instead of cutting down, those Trees.

Problem is, I won't get much if any wood from the trees. They are rotted out & way too close to the house.
One of them is 100' tall, and 80' wide at the top.
About a 5' diameter trunk, 5' off the ground.
In other words, a monster tree. It's only 30' from the house & it's scaring the pants off me.

I'm getting $2.00 back from state but owe the fed's about $600.00. Apparently my bonuses this year put me in a few higher tax brackets than I normally am. So much for using my tax refund to go on vacation!!

I haven't used the nuclear option of no pants yet.
I actually know where that meme started, BTW.

Measured up 5' off the ground, the trunk is 5' in diameter.
They are bringing in a 100 ton crane & a 80' bucket truck
to deal with this monster. The estimator said he thinks it's
north of 20 tons for the one tree. It could be more.

Sadly, it's all rotted. :frown:

Ya know ... rotted wood is just spalted wood, right?

Stabilized Spalted Oak is pretty .... and I'm sure that not all the branches are totally worthless too ... :)

I'd need a swimming pool of CA to stabilize this stuff.
I plan on keeping some of it to make bowls & pens with.
I wanted the lumber, but that's not happening.
My wife already volunteered me to save some to make a few trinkets with.
Wimmins are so sentimental.

Well, mental anyway.

I hate to lose the tree, but I'm glad to see it go.
If that makes sense.

Don't forget to use your 20% HFT coupon and the freebie coupon for one of their mini flashlights, screw driver set, or tape measure, etc. !!! Jackpot!
Jeff

WOOHOO! BIG refund! You should treat yourself to a new tool or two with all that money! Harbor Freight might have a screwdriver or a flashlight you can splurge on!

My family and I got a good chunk back from state and federal (mostly cause of a new kid). But instead of using it for something fun, It gets to be spent on prepping the home for sale and paying for the mortgage while the house is on the market.

We got a nice return of overpayment. I'm not a fan of loaning the government money, but I know that I won't save that amount through the year (unless I contribute it to 401k), so we bought a new mattress! I also got a decent raise by paying off my student loans :)
