My wife and I were out looking at a piece of property that we were thinking about buying and she found this on the property. The property owner told us that these were called pine spurs.

Has anyone else ever seen anything like them?

If it has a strong pine smell (like turpentine) that it is fat wood, heart pine, lighter wood or even a different name. All the names are the same, just different names for different regions or locals of the country. It is very resinous, therefore often used to light a fire.

I thought it might be lighter wood, but there is no strong pine smell and the central shaft is the center of a limb or a tree.

The things that look like fins feel like wood and not like resin.

Conifers that fall and rot leave the most resistant reminants. High resin content resists decay and remains to linger longer.

All those I have checked are full of cracks and came apart during drilling - even attempting CA reinforcement. Maybe GA pines will work.
