At the last turner's club meeting (local) the demo included using a right angle electric sander with small (2"?) sanding pads. I don't really need one for my pens but think it would be handy to have.

Done anyway know of an value-priced (read under $100) version of this? I have tried MSC, Grizzley, Harbor Freight, and Woodcraft with no luck. The closest is a right angle cordless drill (18V)at Harbor Freight for $79.00.

I don't need it to be cordless and don't have enough volume on my compressor for a pneumatic model.

We have a small store in our town that, to me, is a treasure chest. He sells import tools at way cheap prices. I have never been dissapointed. He has two different right angle grinders, one $15, the other $20. The cheaper is exactly the same color and appearance as a Makita. No, I'm not fooled, it's probably deliberate but for occasional use, worth a try. I suggest you look for one of these import stores, they are spinging up all over the place.

I think he's looking for more of a right angle drill as a grinder turning at high rpm would not be good. I have a Milwakee and a Dewalt for bowls but sears has a pretty good one that goes on sale for $99.00 every once in a while.

Thanks for the input. I guess I am looking for a drill really and the sanding pads can be chucked into any jacobs chuck. The right angle gives more manueverability and control.

Those are some nice units but I don't have quite that much money to spend on something that will only see use once in a great while as a sander on turned items.

Beg to differ with ya there Mudder. I use the $15 HF rt angle die grinder on ALL of my bowls and have even used it on some pens[;)] I have slung some discs off but that is very rare and the velcro was worn. The sanding pads hold up really well.

Good for you

I am under the impression that this type of grinder is what is being spoken of:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=3150

I saw no mention of die grinder by Frank and I don't think this type of grinder is good for bowls. It's my opinion, yours may differ.

If these cheap little grinders use cheap little universal motors why not try one of those little speed controllers for routers that HF sells for $24 regularly and sometimes puts on sale for $9.99 along with a buffing wheel or whatever.......

Went to one of the local HF today. They didn't have any of the 90 degree drills in stock. Looked at the lighter grinders but can't see how to hook up a jacobs chuck to them.

I like your idea Jim, but, as originally stated, I don't have the capability to use anything that uses that much air.

Well I won and e-bay bid on a drill and should receive it soon. Has anyone gotten the 2" sander pad and discs from CSUSA? I started to order them but wasn't sure I was looking at a set. Maybe Nils can tell me.
