Picked up this kit in Atlanta at Highland Hardware last weekend-

I think it was a PSI kit from the kit# but never says it anywhere. I needed a new awl so this looked like something that would work. It was pretty quick and easy. The wood is scrap of walnut that I never would use for a bottle stopper, had too many knots but turned out pretty good for this.

Need an awl? I recommend this kit :)

One of those awls was one of my very first turning projects. I needed an awl and after awl [:p] why spend a $1.50 on a ready-made when for about $10.00 and a couple hours work you can make your own? [;)]

Popular Woodworking (November 2005) identified three different awl configurations that were highly useful. The good news is that you can easily modify the blade on the "scratch awl" to either the bird cage or chisel awl configuration with grinder or file.

You need 3 of those so you can have one of each -- or you can get fancy with multi-axis turnings and make a traditional oval shaped handles too.... What a slippery slope we slide upon...
