Does anyone have an idea of what this might be? I thought it might be Ambrosia Maple. But now I'm not sure what it is. I'm going to probably get about 6 good pen blanks out of it... thought I should know what it is.
Thanks.

I don't know what it is, but the grain looks very open for maple, even burl maple. All that I have ever seen is very closed and tight, even in the burls.

Of course all of you who have open grained burl maple blocks laying around are welcome to post pictures and contradict me :)

I think those are not open grain, rather tear outs that possibly caused by some dull tool on soft wood. The wood does look like it spalted some which may explain why it got soft (looks almost like buckeye soft).

And yes, it could be another wood too.

Dario I think is correct its big leaf maple burl. It can look very different from burl to burl the nature of the oyster of the forest(the maple tree, crack it open you never know what you will get).Victor
