During the recent members in need benefit for JohnnyCNC I offered a Mesquite pen display box to the person with the best offer. The deal was that I would then use the proceeds to buy rafle tickets; 50% for JohnnyCNC and 50% for the person who made the best offer. Well, Mr. Mark Gum came through with a best offer of $350 and won the box and blanks. More info is found here: http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8351&highlight=MarkGum&page=3.

I really wanted to make something special so I dug though my entire stash of mesquite to find the best figured wood I had. Curly mesquite is my favorit and I did not have anything I really liked so I fired up my Timberking 1220 sawmill and milled a good log just for this project! I then dried the wood and machined the needed pieces to make the box.

The finished box will hold 12 of the biggest pens that we make and has 6 coats of lacquer, hand rubbed to a high gloss. The interior is a tan suede meterial glued to a wood substrate. The hardware was special ordered from smallboxhardware.com and is nickel.

Thanks again to Mark for stepping to the plate with such a generous offer. You are a true hero, my friend! The box will be shipped out this week along with the 12 curly mesquite blanks. I hope you enjoy!

Curtis, that's a beautiful looking display box. The curly mesquite is awesome. Your miters joints are super tight and the hardware looks great.

Did you build the box and then cut the lid off with your table saw in order to match the grain from box to lid?

BTW. Thanks for the link for the hardware. I always struggle to find nice hardware for boxes. I've bookmarked that site.

Keith,

You are close on how I did the lid. I cut and prepped the pieces for each side, making them all wide enough to accommodate the top as well. I then made a cut to partial depth on the top portion to accommodate the glass. They were all then mitered with my Incra jig and test fit. I then ripped off the top piece on each. Everything was then glued up with the top pieces having the glass inserted into the grove, similar to a floating panel in a cabinet door.

Thanks for the explanation Curtis. That sounds easy enough, as long as you keep all the parts numbered or labeled

I've made a box with dovetail joints and cut the lid off on the table saw. It is simple enough, but you have to watch the last cut. You need to shim the existing cuts open to stop the blade binding.

White chalk works wonders for marking the pieces. Make a single vertical line on piece 1, 2 for piece 2, etc.. Then cut the parts. Once assembled, the white chalk wipes off very easily with no residue.
