Hmmm .... pretty sure the second hardest naturally occurring mineral was corundum (sapphire/ruby). It's also known by it's more common trade name of Aluminum Oxide, used for abrasives.

Strange, that I can pick up a 25# bag of black sapphire from Harbor Freight for around 35 bucks ... :)


Have you guys tried using a carbide glass cutting bit for drilling jade?

Interesting thread and good information on drilling a hard substance. However, jgrden is really sharp today. Must have had razor soup for lunch.
