Hi Micah,

Have you made any pens yet? I looked back at some of your posts, and it seems you are just getting started in penturning. That's great!

This is a great place to learn about penturning. There are a lot of helpful folks here. What kind of pen kits do you think you will start with (if in fact, you have not already started)? Many people start with slimline pens. They are very forgiving.

In time, you may move on to more complex kits. Your skills will grow as you master each kit. You will most likely gain confidence, and move on to larger challenges. Perhaps one day you will not need a kit at all. You may come up with your own unique design. That would really be something great, wouldn't it?

Please do tell us about how your penturning skills are coming along, will you?

Tim

Hi guys and gals! As you can see I was kindly asked to give an update on the way things were going and progressing on my pen turning.
Well, I've almost got everything that I need. I have received some BOW Blanks from Gary, some samples from Steve, and a few small things from Arizona S. including Bills "how to" dvd. Which is awesome! All I am really waiting on now is an order from CSUSA (which should be here today) to get started . It has a press, kits (mainly 10k Cigars and slimlines), barrel trimmers, and some micro mesh.
I've only been turning on a lathe now for about 2 months and can't wait to get started on some pens. I started with making some game calls (which I'm not giving up, just expanding). Here some links to some things that I have turned lately to give some examples.

Thanks to everyone that has been so helpful to me! I can't wait to be able to contribute to this site and maybe make some new friends!

Those look pretty cool Micah! I haven't tried game calls yet, but the variety of shapes makes them appealing.

Good luck with your pens! I'd start with a Cigar or two before moving to a slimline; there isn't much meat on a bushing-to-bushing slimline, and it's very easy to lose the pen that way. Although, you'll probably have less trouble than I did, since you have some turning experience already.

Again, good luck!
