Flat rate shipping

OMG. Can you believe it. We are years behind the US but we finally have flat rate shipping. Not cheap as some people will have to drive 200 plus km to get the boxes. But hey it's a start.

Hmmm ... if you ask your postman nicely, they MIGHT bring you some flat rate boxes, but typically you go into the post office in the USA and pick up the Priority Mail Flat Rate Shipping boxes yourself ... they're free.

I like to walk in and start folding boxes... I grab the larger of the two medium boxes and fold around 8 of the small flat rate boxes and they fit right into the larger box (upright, just slot them in like drawers). Excellent free storage solution for those who are just starting out, but I also use them to mail things... :tongue:

Says on their website for pickup only right now. I am going to call tomorrow and find out. I will spend $50 on gas to go get them. That's crazy.

No such luck for the Canucks. We will have to PAY for boxes. Americans have it so good (including) fast postal delivery to most destinations.

It looks like you purchase them because it includes postage. If they did it that way here in the USA people wouldn't stock pile them for no reason and wouldn't use them for other things.

Then again, why do you think the price of stamps has doubled since 1996? 20 years ago I remember a First Class postage stamp was 25 cents.

When I couldn't find a box last week for wrapping a gift.......the post office came through for me. Just walked over to a shelf and took one out of my stock.

I go to the USPS website and order them on line...they are shipped free to me by the post office. I only go to the post office to pick them up when I forget to order

COMPLAINTS FROM YANKS ABOUT USPS .... Bahh

We hear so many complaints from the Yanks about their USPS ... if they only knew that YANKS HAVE IT SOOOOOOO GOOD !!!

USPS is much faster service and more comprehensive and has better tracking than CanadaPost. . And coupled to PayPal, etc., etc.

In Canada there is no MediaMail rate, for one thing. And until now, no flat rate boxes.

So now we have flat rate boxes. . In the US, you just pick up the flat rate boxes at the nearest Post Office ... or, like some have said, order them and have them delivered to your home ... FREE !

In Canada .... I know that the flat rate box concept is just starting, but .... you have to buy the box at the full postal rate for that box .... and there are 50 places in the whole of Canada where you can buy them ....

.... did you GET THAT ? .... 50 places in the whole of Canada, which is larger than the USA .... 50 places where you can go to BUY the boxes !!!!!!!

Here's the quote from the CanadaPost website ....

"Purchase a flat rate box in-store at any one of 50 post office locations. Find a location near you. While only available for purchase at select stores, the boxes can be sent from any post office across Canada."

50 locations in our country of 3.855 million square miles !!!!! ... There is NO LOCATION in my city and many other major cities.

And here's another thing .... you Yanks can use your boxes to ship Internationally.

The Canadian boxes are only good for shipping within Canada !!!! . Whoop-Di-Do !!!!

Travel up to several hundred miles to one of the 50 places to BUY your box for full postage price .... deliver it to a postal facility to mail it .... to some other luckless Canadian !!!! . Who wants to do that .... who can afford to do it ??

OK .... I know that this thing is just getting off the ground in Canada .... do you think it EVER will ???????????

YOU YANKS HAVE IT SOOOOOOOO GOOD WITH USPS !!!!!! . IN EVERY WAY !!!!!

I think you should absorb Canada and make us part of your system .... except for the Electoral College crap .... but we can't get into politics here !!!

I think the Canadian Post should take a good hard look at the American Post Office System, see where we're screwing it up, and make the fixed version so we can copy it and steal it back.

Has anyone seen the actual cost of the boxes. I went checking the website, and couldn't find a price anywhere.
Closest for me is Barhaven, about 1hr drive. Maybe I'll check it out when I go visit my sister.

Yes, the boxes are unnecessarily large, in my opinion ... especially the smallest. . USPS flat rate sizes are probably more practical for most purposes.

Well, took a bit of formatting to get this to look right, but there ya go...

Seems that their small flat rate box is roughly FOUR TIMES the size of ours.

The medium is basically twice the height, nearly the same length and width ... the large nearly double height again.

What's strange is the 11 lb weight limit ...

They charge for size of box first, then they charge you for what the box weighs when shipped. If they can't get you one way, they will try to get you the other.

Uhh ... no, they'll only add an additional charge if the box exceeds the 5 Kg max allowed weight, plus there's something about no guaranteed delivery time if the weight is exceeded.

Actually USPS is one of the World's most reliable delivery services and has been for my entire life and even before that. We complain so much because we have very high expectations. We expect USPS to be fast, accurate, reliable and safe...for the most part we get that.

And it's gotta be AFFORDABLE, cuz we gotta send 3 billion packages a year to family all round the states for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and ..... uhh ... did I say Christmas? no, that's a birthday too, innit?

Only time I've ever heard of a mail service more efficient than ours, some years ago I read a story about the British mail service... seems someone sent a letter to a gentlemen in one of the communities of Britain... the envelope did not have a name or an address on it, just a description of the man. The letter was delivered on time and to the right person....

Times have changed....I've sent things there that got held at the Post Office for Tax and the recipient wasn't even told it was there, had to go in and ask. (They did have his phone number on the customs form).

Smitty, I can't comment on the state of UK customs now as I've been out the business since 2005, but as I remember the customs service in Uk was pretty efficient back in those days... 'course I dealt more with the ocean ports and the airports customs.

Whether we Canadians like the higher postage rates vs. the US or not one of the key differences between the two postal systems is that Canada Post made a profit $63M (2015) whereas, the USPS has traditionally ran a pretty significant annual deficit. One way or another the user or the taxpayer pays.

But... it is nice to see that flat rate shipping has arrived in Canada. Even if I have to drive 1/2 hour to the closet postal outlet to buy a box.

I can't speak for Canada Post, I know only that it is a crown corporation, but the USPS is an independent government agency. It is one of the few government agencies specifically authorized by the US Constitution. Actually the USPS predates the US Constitution - Benjamin Franklin was appointed Postmaster General in 1775 before there was even our Declaration of Independence. The USPS is required by law to provide mail service to every US address at the same price so operating at a profit virtually impossible.
