Is anyone aware of a reference that shows the relative strengths of woods across the grain? Any help would be appreciated.

The book "Understanding Wood" by Hoadley has a chart showing strengths of common North American woods. It is copyrighted so I won't post a pic but if you are interested in a specific type let me know.

There are alot of factors such as glue used, types of wood used and age of wood. More open grain will allow more glue to seap in than old growth which has tighter grain. Not sure if this matters to you.

Thanks for the info. This is a different type of turning where I am trying to turn something akin to a spindle across grain.
