I think it depends on the type of material. For the wood ones I recently made, I used Enduro and they came out with amazing gloss and grain showing nicely. For acrylic ones, I sand to 8,000 or so micro mesh and then apply some Meguires auto polish while it is still on the lathe. After that, it's their Carnuba wax. The shine that the polish brings out in the acrylic is like nothing I have ever seen before.

I use my regular home brew finish like I do on pens, then I put one lite coat of Deft Spray Lacquer on. The home brew was one I got out of the finishing forum a while back. It works a lot like Mylands friction wax.
