battery charger question

My 12V battery charger is acting oddly - on two different batteries!

The charger will spike up and down in voltage very rapidly - the needle goes left and right quickly. It seems that it will only charge when set to 2amp trickle.

It has settings for 2 or 15 amp, or 100 amp 'jumpstart', and regular and deep cycle motors; I have it set correctly.

The charger doesn't seem to want to charge in 15amp mode...any idea why?

Which switch, Herb - and is it replaceable?

I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron..

The selector switch has probably gone bad.
It might cost you more to fix it than buy a new charger.

Thanks Herb - being stubborn, I'll have a look at fixing this one first...but finding parts might be the hard part!
