That question has been asked many times and seems there is no definite answer. The answer that gets brought up most is that back in the 1800's the old lathes the tool rest looked like a banjo in shape and it stuck. :):):)

I think it is because of the shape of the slot you see when some of the old fashion ones were viewed from above.

Plus it gives you musical support while you are standing there "Fiddling" around.
