I don't remember when I turned my first pen but it was a week or 2 before I joined the IAP. And it got me thinking. I got my lathe and the basics to make a few slim lines. I literally sat on the ground in front of my lathe making my first few.

We are seeing new members turning pens that IMO blew my first several (or a whole lot more) away. Now is it people seem to research the hobby more, or are they watching youtube videos and knowing what they are doing?

I have seen a lot more kits come out (especially the last 2 years).

What have you all noticed since you started?

For sure, I have seen a lot of new kits since I started in 2010.

I have also seen newbies showing pens of a quality that far surpasses my newbie pens.
It is hard to say what accounts for that, but it could very well be that they did more research than I did before starting. . I didn't even know IAP existed for my first year or so and I never thought to look on youtube.
