Simple Celtic Knot

A challenge just to see if I could do it!

This was about the 10'th attempt. I had all the appropriate issues to learn from:

The cuts were not exactly the same,
the blank was not exactly square,
the laminate was too thick (not enough glue),
the laminate was too thin (too much glue),
the blank exploded when drilled,
the blank exploded when turned,
I had chip outs when turned to size...

Thank you to the folks who wrote IAP Library articles, and the numerous threads over the years - This is about as simple as the knots get, but I just wanted to try it myself. A special thanks to Joe (wood128) for his encouragement!

Oh... I have a TON of respect for segmenters!!!

Not a work of art, but One more check on my "Bucket List."

Great attempt Mark, the perseverance paid off in the end...!

I also have great admiration for many of the segmenters, I've seen through the years and on IAP, some segmentations are just out of this world and, certainly not something for everyone, I lack of patience for such work but, I can appreciated it.

As you yourself said Mark, the bucket list is now one item shorter, the question is, how many have you add-up, since...? is it like the "honey do list"...???:wink:

I think you did pretty damned good too!!
A lot of folks don't realize that to make and finish a cross or Celtic Knot blank, you end up using about five or six different reference points for each stage..Only one needs to be off a tad to ruin it......mostly with the drilling.
I now do ALL of my segmenting from one reference point only.......the centre line.!!:biggrin:

Yes, I now have a metal lathe and even a small mill, but I was doing it from the centre line when I only had my wood lathe. I still don't have a table saw....:biggrin:

Nicely done Mark. With practice it does get easier, but there is always a new pitfall around each corner so it's never simple.
