The best stock to make bushings is 12L14 steel. You can get small off-cut pieces on ebay for very little. These are 4" to 6" scraps from large CNC machining machines.
This company sells the off-cuts from their cutting operation at slightly cheaper prices in 10" to 12" lengths.
Order Alloy Steel, Carbon, COLD ROLL, Mild Steel, STEEL HEX, Metal Pack, METRIC ROUND BAR, Plate, Rectangle, Rectangle Tube, Round, Sheet, Square, Square Tube, Tube Alloys , 1018, 1045, 1144, 12L14, 4130, 4140, 4140/4142, 4142, 4330 VAR, 4340, 4340 V

1018 is also doable, but tends to tear rather than cut. I've never had much luck with stainless.

If you do order steel online, bu nice to your postal carrier. The lady that delivers my mail has a standing offer. "Any package that arrives, come to the door and knock. If I am home, I will come out to the truck and carry it into the house."

OOPS, I just Googled it and saw it is a type of stainless. How does it machine, like 303 or more difficult like 304? I had never heard or used it before.

I painted my phone number on the mailbox so she can call me. But I'm rural Oklahoma too so we're all a little country.

That is awesome! I tried making a custom bushing last week and managed to get the 7mm hole 10 thou off on one side--drilling into the hole I drilled for centering (not to mention that it was a real b*&^h getting it drillled). I'm afraid my lathe just doesn't have the precision any more.
