I saw this on craigslist. I don't know much about metal lathes, but I know I want to learn. It was used until recently in a motor repair shop. The picture is not that good but its all I have. Maybe one of you experts will recognize what it is. Thanks.

can't see all that well, but it looks like an old South Bend model 9 or 9A.
Depending on what kind of tooling it comes with, could be $200, could
be $1500. (I've seen lots of CL ads in that price range, but they seem
to stay there forever..)
I sold mine for $650, but it had a 4 jaw and 3 jaw chuck plus a quick
change tool post and plenty of indexable carbide bits.
I think I see a lantern tool post there, you'd probably want to get
rid of that ASAP. It will do the job, but a push mower will also mow
your 15 acre lawn if you need it to.

Check the condition of the ways. If those aren't clean, it is a paperweight.
Check the gears, check the play in the crossfeed. If there isn't too much
backlash and the ways are good, I'd say 3-400 as is (if that's the 4' bed)
Good tooling is worth more.
You'd probably spend a week or more tearing it apart and cleaning it..
that's a good way to learn about it and get the feel for how everything
works together.
If that's a model 9 there are still plenty of parts available.. and some people
will cast new ones if you need them.

What all does it come with and how much are they asking for it?

Any make/model info?

Barney

The ad was pretty sparse. It did not mention tooling or extras. The owner passed away and his family is getting rid of his shop contents. I don't think they know much about it themselves. I'm hoping to pick up a bargan since this is something I don't have to have right now. The ad said "Name your price".

Thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to check those things.

Tooling adds up really fast if the condition is unknown, meaning you do not know if it was a production machine or a weekend warrior unit offering more than $500 would be a big risk, If it has extra chucks, tool post etc then value goes up fast. I only have a Jet 9 X 20 And I have way more in tooling than the cost new for the lathe & bench, FYI I paid About $1,400 new for my lathe 7 yrs ago. But for the home hobbyist it is plenty of lathe. Although if I had to do it all over again I would have purchased a mill lathe combo. Little smaller but more useful.

Good luck either way.

I found out it's a 10" South Bend Lathe. The owner was the original purchaser. They're asking $2500 for the lathe, and another 500 for all the tooling of which there is a significant amount. $3000 is out of my price range right now, so I think I'll pass. If it's still listed in a couple of weeks I'll make a low ball offer.
