Finishing Tool

I read an article on a tool called the Contrary Finishing Tool and decided to try it out. I didn't have any HSS, so I made it out of Cold Rolled Steel square stock. Before you go and buy all the stuff (really a 1/2" CRS 3ft piece is only about 6$), here is what I found......The CRS tool didn't really give me that great of a finish, compared to a fresh HSS bit in the indexable cutter, but what it did was to shave off that 0.001 very nicely-really fine "swarf" is the term all the machinist geeks use. The finish may be different with a HSS blank instead-I need to get some HSS blanks and experiment. I am only using it on plastics, the article author used his on various metal with great sucess. I can post the PDF if you are interested or you can Goggle search for it. The pen nib was the recipient of that cut. I had to try it out with the quick and easy DRO I made.

Nice Cris. I like the pen. I have some HSS tools that came with my lathe. They are broken on the ends. If you can use them, I'll give them to you. And, why not post that pdf for me? So, I don't have to go looking. :biggrin:

Thanks for the kind words. My other daughter wanted a pen, so I ended up modifying one I had made a while back. Now all I need is a camera that will take decent pictures or eyes that will see more focused. Here is the PDF for your grinding and turning pleasure....
