I thinking of making a chess set. Anyone have some 1"x1"x?? and 1.5"x 1.5"x ??? Gaboon ebony?

Hi Richard,

Are you sure you want Gaboon Ebony? (It can have a lot of light streaks and sapwood.)

If you're looking for "the blackest wood", you might be better off looking for African Blackwood. (I saw that Steve Smith has some for sale in the classifieds.)

It can be -- but not necessarily. I just think it's worth specifying that you want "dark as possible, no sapwood that won't be turned away" or you might end up disappointed.

ABW also comes in a spectrum from black through streaky to brown. Burmese blackwood is another possibility worth considering.
