Anyone know of a good place to get wood from? I usually visit Rockler or get them through the place I order kits from. I have a band saw and would like to start buying wood by the BF and cutting it myself. I am primarly interested in exotic wood from asian/africa. Who has the best selection at the lowest price?

Thanks!

hey, check my ebay store out, keyword "chitswood" on ebay.

we don't sell alot of seperate blanks, we sell whole boards, so I hope you can cut the blanks outta them

If you watch our auctions I can guarantee you'll find some killer deals.

Enjoy, even if you aren't getting blanks from us, you better try exotic hardwoods, you'll be very sorry if you don't!

The five listed above are my primary suppliers as well. I do some occasional eBay buys outside of them, but Rob (BigRob777), Dario (Dario), Bill (ilikewood), and Rich (low_48) are all pen turners so they know what most pen turners are looking for, and Darick (chitswood) is catching on very quickly. To be honest, I'm somewhat disappointed Darick found IAP and vice versa...I used to get some great deals from his father and him on eBay!!! [:)] Oh, two other people who sell here pretty regularly and who are also wood turners are Drew (whatwoodido) and Mark (youngturner); their stuff is also usually very nice.

If you want to get an idea of the caliber of wood these guys sell versus what Rockler, Woodcraft, etc. typically sell, check out these threads:

I tried to find one thread from all of the suppliers mentioned, but some haven't posted in a while. However, keep an eye out for their posts...Rich and Bill typically only post here when they come across something truly unusual.

I use Dario, BigRob777, and Skip at http://www.xmission.com/~burlturn/ It doesn't happen often but sometimes you can find good wood and good prices at the local places like Woodcraft. When I first started I did buy most of my wood blank cut from Craft Supplies, but the three I've listed above have been wonderful to deal with and provide amazing wood. You will save some money cuting your own wood. Good luck.[8D]

I agree with Drew [:)]. Set your price and stick with it (avoid bidding wars at all cost) [;)]

I have had great luck with the gang here on the forum. However, I also buy from http://www.westpennhardwoods.com. I do a lot of business with them for most of my flat work.
An my turners group usually head out in the fall for a group buy. Rocky is great to deal with.

just my 2 cents worth

I buy a bunch from Woodworker's Source, good selection & reasonable prices. They have an internet site, but they are local for me.

My biggest problem is using up all the wood I seem to acquire by accident. Just the other day I brought home a truck load given by a friend who was moving. I'm cutting up a storm felled tree in the yard and pitching the wood into a pile. Can't believe I'm doing that. It is walnut and a big tree but I have more than I can use or give away. Now, I just met a guy who is in the tree trimming/removal business. He will call me whenever he cuts a tree that is interesting wood like fruitwoods, hackberry, holly, whatever. The key is start scrounging and asking, you will seldom have to spend money to get good woods.
